Networking with Purpose: How Iโ€™m Making Real Connections During My Internship

When I started my internship, I realized that casually "meeting people" wasnโ€™t enough. If I wanted to learn and grow, I needed to be intentional about who I talked to and why. So Iโ€™ve been approaching networking with a clear strategy โ€” hereโ€™s whatโ€™s working:

1. Know What Youโ€™re Looking For
Before I reach out to anyone, I ask myself:

  • What am I curious about?

  • What do I want to learn from this person?

This helps me target the right people, for example, team leads in [insert interest area like โ€œproduct marketingโ€ or โ€œdata scienceโ€] โ€” and tailor my conversations accordingly.

2. Keep It Short & Respectful
I send quick messages asking for 15-20 minutes of their time for an informal chat. I make it clear Iโ€™m an intern, mention what specifically Iโ€™d love to hear about, and always thank them for considering it. Most people say yes.

3. Come Prepared with Real Questions
Instead of just โ€œWhat do you do?โ€, I ask things like:

  • What decisions led you to your current role?

  • What do you wish youโ€™d known earlier in your career?

  • Whatโ€™s a challenge youโ€™ve had to navigate here?

4. Listen Like You Mean It
I treat these chats like mini masterclasses. I take notes, ask follow-ups, and stay fully engaged. People notice when you actually care.

5. Follow Up Thoughtfully
Afterwards, I send a short thank-you message that references something we talked about. It shows I was paying attention โ€” and it keeps the door open for future conversations.

Why This Works:

  • Iโ€™m getting real insight into roles, career paths, and company culture.

  • Iโ€™m building genuine relationships, not just โ€œcontacts.โ€

  • Iโ€™ve started to connect with informal mentors, and people are remembering me for the right reasons.

  • Most importantly, these conversations are helping me figure out what I want from my career.

๐Ÿ” Deep Dive: Company Spotlight (Tech)

Next week at WWDC, Apple is expected to roll out its most ambitious AI initiative yet: โ€œApple Intelligence.โ€ Instead of launching a flashy chatbot, Appleโ€™s rumored approach is to quietly embed generative AI across its core apps and operating systems.

Instead of a chatbot, expect AI features baked into everyday apps:

  • ๐Ÿ“„ Smart summaries in Safari

  • ๐Ÿ“ง Suggested replies in Mail

  • ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ A revamped, actually useful Siri

  • ๐Ÿ”’ On-device AI for speed + privacy

  • ๐Ÿ”ง Dev tools for AI-native apps

Why It Matters:

  • This isnโ€™t catch-up; itโ€™s classic Apple: deeply integrating AI into experiences people already use, with a heavy focus on privacy.

  • For developers, this could mean new frameworks (likely tied to Core ML), and a big push to rethink how apps can use AI natively.

  • For tech pros, it's a signal to level up on Appleโ€™s ecosystem, especially how to build practical, user-first AI features.

Bottom line: Even if Appleโ€™s not first, its execution could reshape how AI fits into our everyday digital lives โ€” quietly, and everywhere.
